If you’re a journalist and if you were reporting on a event, for your story, you would need to ask how the event happened and what exactly happened.

However as a person who stutters, do you really need to keep thinking about how you are speaking?

Being overly concerned about how we’re speaking is what keeps on getting us into trouble, resulting in more anxiety and more stammering.

Instead focus on what you want to say, rather than how you are saying it. This takes your mind off worrying about stammering.

There’s a subtle difference here, but it does exist. Try it out for yourself.

If you’re about to speak and you feel your anxiety levels rising, just pause. Tell yourself, “I’m going to focus on what I want to say”. Do this with a powerful internal tone and then say out aloud what you want to.
