How to Keep On Progressing In Life

5893272501_302f9e54df

So, you’ve made some great strides in your life. It could be working on overcoming a particular challenge at work, or in a relationship perhaps. It might be developing a certain skill, and your self-belief has increased.

This is what self-development is all about.

You’ve now proven to yourself that you can create change, you might want to take your progress to the next level. In order to do this, you will need to build upon the work you’ve done. Check out the following tips to find out how you can do this:

Awareness that you’re on a journey

By understanding that your personal growth is a journey, you realise that your path is a continuous process. You’ve taken some actions. You have learnt new things about yourself and your wisdom has grown.

However, the journey doesn’t end here. There are still a many further steps to be taken. Continue this journey in the same way, learning, gaining feedback and adapting accordingly.

As your confidence grows even further, you will be able to take on greater feats.

Be committed

Commitment can be a very powerful force. By being committed to your endeavours, you create the self-discipline needed to continue moving forward.

You can cultivate more commitment by having a strong enough ‘why’ in the things you do. What does having an even better life than the one you currently have, mean to you? If the meaning is strong enough, your commitment will follow.

Continue to dream big

Carry on dreaming big. You’ve made great progress and did so through thinking what you previously believed was unimaginable.

You’ll only be short changing yourself, if you forget to continue building on your capacity to dream of doing even greater things in the world.

The late and great Nelson Mandela has taught us and generations to come the power of what can happen when you dream big.

Have a sense of awe

When making progress in life, it can sometimes be easy to think you’ve done it now. You don’t need further help and you know all there is to know.

It’s careful to ensure arrogance doesn’t breed through your new found confidence, as arrogance itself can a hindrance to further exploration of yourself and your capabilities. Also, it is a turn off to people who you come in contact with.

Instead, continue to marvel at life, nature and all that you have left to figure out, and how exciting it will be to do so.

Continue to be open to advice

Be open to advice that others may be able to offer you. The truth is others will always be more experienced in certain areas, which you’re now ready to move into.

Be open to all people across all generations. We can learn something new and useful from a young child, just as we can from someone who is more senior.

Be courageous

The greater you develop a person, the more courage you will need. Therefore, when you’ve made the decision to make another change in your life and doubts creep in about your ability to succeed, stand tall in the face of these, with the same courage that you used to help you already overcome countless problems and challenges.

My friends, it’s over to you:

• What other techniques, attitudes and approaches can we use to help us build on the progress we’ve made in our lives, so that we can do even more good?

Hiten, I think along the lines of being on a journey and having awe, is learning the lessons that life has to teach us. If we can view life as a teacher and circumstances as lessons, we can continually, learn, improve and become better students at this school of life. ALso, kind of thinking will open us up to advice – when life’s a lessons, we do need teachers, mentors and advisors to teach us. Once we realize it’s a journey, we can measure it, reflect upon it and change course if it’s not going well :)

      Hi Vishnu,

I just loved what you wrote about learning from the lessons of life. Indeed, as you quite rightly said, by viewing life as a teacher and situations as lessons, we create the opportunity for ourselves to continue learning and improving. I’ve never looked at it like this before, and many thanks for sharing.

Absolutely, by looking at our experiences as a journey, by its very nature, a journey can then be measured, reflected upon and changed when needed.

Many thanks for sharing some wonderful advice, Vishnu! Hope you’re having a good week! :-)

Hiten, I love all your points here…but the one I especially love is “Have a sense of awe”! I feel like being in a state of constant amazement and awe over the divine creations gives us an open mind and softer heart, which in-turn leads to progression…physically, emotionally and spiritually.

    Much Love,

    Hi Hiten,

Inspirational post indeed, and you very well mentioned everything in this post, leaving us little to add in it :)

Yes, the perfect ways to keep progressing in life. I think when you make up your mind, you can achieve anything. So, when you know you want to evolve and grow as a person, you in a way progress a step further in your life. You just go and keep achieving things you aim for with courage and determination, without really taking the negativity of life to heart as those too teach you a lot many lessons in life, isn’t it?

Being in awe and taking each day as it comes by being grateful for the smallest of things is a major way to move ahead and appreciate life. Being committed to your work and remaining consistent by working hard always pays.

Thanks for sharing. Have a nice week ahead :)

      Hi Harleena,

Thank you so much for your wonderful comment!

I just loved what you wrote about how when we make up our mind to keep progressing in life, this decision helps us to get into action

Your comment reminded me of one way of looking at continuing to make strides in our life. In essence, we’re doing more of the same as in getting better and increasing our performance, similarly to the way we’ve created changes previously. Of course, the activities we’ll be doing might be different as will be the approaches we use.

      Have a great weekend, Harleena!

Hi Hiten – I think your first point is the most important one, for me. We spend so much of our lives looking forward to the day when we arrive, when we achieve the great success, when we acquire the thing we’ve been longing for – and then, even if we get what we’re aiming for, we often end up feeling deflated, and I think that’s because we forget that the journey’s the thing, but we miss out on it because we’re focused on the goal ahead. It also helps us to cope when things don’t turn out as planned, because journeys can involve changes in direction. Seeing ourselves as being on a constant journey definitely helps us to keep making progress and to deal with the inevitable changes, difficulties and hurdles we face along the way.

I love all the other points you make, too, especially the one about remaining open to advice – we’re never too old to learn something new and may need someone else’s help at times to get things into perspective.

    Thanks, Hiten.

      Hi Sue,

Thank you for writing such a wonderful comment, my friend!

What you wrote about how we can keep waiting for the day for success to arrive, and even when it does, we can feel unsatisfied is so true. It’s a great example of what happens when we miss out on the true gem, which is the journey itself. Such an attitude locks us out of the wonderful things we can learn about ourselves and the world, if only we had focused more on the journey.

Indeed, as you say, journeys by their very nature are susceptible to change. Hence, by emphasising on the path, we open ourselves to the opportunity to change direction when needed.

Many thanks for adding so much more to this post, Sue. Have a wonderful weekend! :-)

    Hiten,

I love the general stance you describe for us in this post. It’s one of being open, not only to advice, but to the whole process. It’s an attitude of faith that life has something better in store for us, if we just remain willing to see it. Whenever I’ve approached life with this attitude I’ve been rewarded. But when I’ve been scared and closed down I’ve struggled to move forward. Thanks for breaking down this attitude into parts for us to see.

I really appreciate what you wrote in your comment about having an attitude of faith that life has good things in store for us, as long as we are willing to see it. It’s wonderful that you’ve had great results with this approach. Looking at life as a journey can really help in this regards. It’s like there are so many opportunities to learn and develop in the journey if only we are willing to see this.

I can so relate to what you said about struggling to move forward during those times when we’re scared. This just shows how important our states are and the impact they can have on our behaviours.

Learning and trying new things (well, it is part of learning).

Those are my two top techniques for progress. Experiment with life, try new things and learn from them :D

(I invested a lot more into learning and trying new things this year, and it has been great so far. I consider this as my best year of life, so far :D Hopefully, I will be having a better one next year, I have learned a lot from my experimenting :D)

I think the most important point of all is being open – be ready to listen, to learn from others (and be ready to accept that we – or our beliefs, ways – could be wrong).

Anyways, thank you for sharing these points, Hiten :) Hope you are having a good week :D

Absolutely, what you wrote about being open to learn from others and understanding that our beliefs can be incorrect is so true. It is when we have a flexible belief system that we enable ourselves to take new perspectives and attitudes, which in turn can help us to grow.

Many thanks, Jeevan for adding so much more to this post. Hope you’re having a good weekend! :-)

Terrific topic for this time of year Hiten. I also believe it’s helpful to keep track of successes along the way – not only for short term motivational purposes, but as guideposts as you reach various milestones. For example I’m working on a couple of pretty major changes coming up in the first quarter of 2014 and because I’m able to look back and see where and how I started this particular journey I can truly appreciate how far I’ve come, because 4 years ago I was completely clueless about many of the things I take for granted these days. Thanks for the inspiration!

I can really appreciate what you wrote about keeping a note of our successes along our journeys. This is so important to do. As you say, this enables us to monitor major points in our progress and we have real evidence of where we’ve been at certain periods and how we have changed along the way.

Many thanks for sharing your experiences of the benefits of this type of tracking. Indeed, we really can create significant changes, which we end up then taking for granted. It can really be useful to reflect on just how much we have achieved, especially during those times when we feel like we’re not making much progress.

Thanks so much for adding so much more value to this post, Marty. Hope you’re having a good weekend! :-)

Great points, my friend! I especially like the points about being in awe and continue to dream big. I was on a business trip traveling to the biggest trade show for my company. There, I met lots of colleagues I normally don’t get to interact with. It was kind of sad to hear one of them put down the impracticality of following the dream. And he’s a relatively young guy, too. Can’t imagine going through life thinking that dreaming leads us astray. If I knew him better, and believed he was receptive to it, I’d offer my take on why dreaming is important–or what you said here so well, that it helps us keep progressing. Keep it up, my friend!

I really appreciate the experience you shared about the trade event. It’s a shame that the young gentleman believed it wasn’t possible to follow one’s dream. There must be so many people out there believing the same. I used to, too. It was only when I got into personal development that my beliefs about what I could achieve began to change, and it all started with learning to dream!

I think one of the important ways to progress in life is through having goals that are close and immediate.

Having big long term goals and aspirations are great. But they aren’t as tangible as they could be when broken down into the things you are going to do in the next two months. When you break down mini-goals in this fashion you can always be (slowly) accomplishing new things and making progress toward your big dreams.

It is breaking the journey of 1000 miles down into it’s individual steps, then all you need to do is walk one step at a time.

As you said, big goals spread out over a long period, just aren’t specific enough. However, as you also said, the same goal can be split into mini chunks where we open the doors to actually see progress we’re being made. By regularly reviewing our progress, we see the results of our efforts, which in turn can keep us motivated to continue.

Great Advice! What makes successful people successful, is they not stay in the same place even after the downfall. You need to be confident and believe that you are worth more than what you are getting, and then go and get it.
