Why a New Year Can Be the Start of the Rest of Your Life

2357549928_1df1a18ca3

It’s New Year’s Eve and 2014 is just hours away! Are you excited about the New Year? Or are you sceptical about what you might be able to achieve in it?

Does a New Year mean more difficult times ahead? Perhaps it means a time for others in your life to make changes, while you stay stuck where you’re at.

It might mean a whole host of other negative things.

No big deal. Why isn’t it a big deal?

Well, what you’ve done is created unhelpful meanings about the New Year. You make meanings about things all the time. All humans do. However, the meaning you attach to the New Year needn’t be set in concrete.

The New Year can always mean something else to you, should you wish it to. You have the power to attach whatever meaning you want to it.

Below are some empowering meanings you can give to 2014, so that your state of mind is one where a New Year really is the start of the rest of your life:

A New Year means time for a new story

What you did this year, and what happened is now an old story. If you had a tough story, then leave this tale where it belongs, which is in the past.

Instead, take time out to write a new story about what you want to achieve this year, and how you’re going to do it.

And I mean physically write it out. Grab some paper and pen now and allow your words to flow, as you describe the type of person you’re going to become this year.

As the saying goes – out with the old and in with the new.

A New Year means an opportunity to do something new

I think there is a big clue in the term New Year with the keyword being ‘new’. The word ‘new’ by its very nature implies freshness and something different.

Therefore, why not use the New Year to do something new that will change your perspective, grow your knowledge, increase your wealth and that will positively impact others.

A New Year means an opportunity to plan

You have 12 whole months to really make your mark. These months can be broken down into weeks and days. Use these wisely by planning some activities throughout the year, which will increase your skills and enhance your wisdom.

A New Year means better relationships

Have a strained relationship with a family member of a friend? Don’t have a partner?

Well a New Year doesn’t have to mean more doom and gloom in the relationships area. Instead, it can mean you will really reach out to others and develop some long-lasting and meaningful relationships.

A New Year means a new self-image

If you’re not happy with your self-image then change it. Change what you tell yourself about you. Alter how you visualise yourself. And then go and live out the words you tell yourself and the images you create of yourself in your mind.

Keep doing this cycle again and again through the year, and this time next year, you might just be the person you dream of being.

My friends, it’s over to you:

    Hi Hiten,

    That was beautiful indeed :)

Yes, a New Year should mean newness all around us, whether it’s in us, our relationships or work. I think when you give way to the new or shift from the old to the new, you are moving ahead and starting something new. It’s a great time to also introspect and evaluate what all you have done and what more you need to do, to realize your mistakes and make amends, and simply to become better by the day, isn’t it?

Thanks for sharing this with us, and I wish you a very Happy and Prosperous New Year. :)

      Hi Harleena,

I’m so glad you liked the post, my friend.

And you’re so right. When we shift from the old and take up something new, which is positive, then we are moving forward. This is a great way of looking at it.

As you say, it’s also perfect time to reflect, and consider what we’ve done and how well and what we need to do, to keep on progressing.

Many thanks for sharing your insights, Harleena and a very Happy New Year to you. May 2014 bring you lots of good health, wealth and success. :- )

Hi Hiten, reflection and contemplation are wonderful things. Perhaps we shouldn’t wait for a new year, but reflect/contemplate each day. I especially like what you say about we are the ones creating meanings about everything in our life. And since we’re making it up, it seems like a good idea to make up something magnificent!

Wishing you abundant blessings for 2014 my friend.

      Hi Elle,

Ah, I just loved what you wrote about making reflection and contemplation activities. I agree there is no need to wait for a new year to do this. Your comment made me think of how fortunate people like us from the self-development community are. We literally create change in our own lives and help others to do the same all year round.

Indeed, I totally agree with your point about making meanings. We are the meaning makers, so we might as well create meanings that powerfully serve us.

Many thanks for commenting, my friend and wishing you a very Happy New Year. I hope you have a wonderful 2014!

    Love it!

New year, new story :D I don’t think there is any better way to put it.

I have questioned the purpose of celebrating New Year, but in the end, I realized it could mean something. Like you mentioned in the post, it could mean a new chapter in our lives.

If you had a bad year, you could try and make this year a good one. If you had a good year (like I did), you could try and make a better one out of 2014.

Thank you for the awesome post, Hiten :) Appreciate it!

    Happy New Year :D

      Hi Jeevan,

Happy New Year to you, my friend! I hope 2014 brings you peace, happiness and prosperity! :-)

Like you, I too have questioned the purpose of the New Year! As I mentioned in my reply to Elle’s comment above, people like us with strong interests and experience in personal development are quite fortunate because we’re creating changes all year round. However, the New Year can certainly be helpful for the general public to start afresh.

Indeed, you’re so right. The New Year can also be used as an opportunity to build upon the great work we did the previous year, if we had a good year.

Thanks very much for commenting and for adding so much more value to this post, Jeevan! :-)

    Hi Hiten
that’s a good idea to start the new year with…Writing a story. In fact even if you dont write a story physically you can script one your life ,that is you start telling yourself some thing diffrerent. Not the same theme you repeated last year.
That is how we craft new realities.
    Thanks

      Hi Mona,

Many thanks for your comment and Happy New Year!

As you quite rightly said, we don’t even have to write down the story. As long as we have a strong enough vision of the person we want to be, and keep this vision at the fore, while using the correct type of self-talk, this can be a powerful driver to help us move towards our ideal self.

Thanks very much for joining the discussion, Mona!

First of all a very Happy New Year to you. Well, indeed its a fresh start, an all new beginning, with all new people and all new rejuvenated thoughts and energies. And its equally important for us to append something new, because unless and until we add, we can’t have a new page to write upon.

Happy New Year Hiten! I’ve been preparing for this New Year for a few months now … I’m in transition mode in a very big way. In fact part of that transition is to think, work and live BIGGER this year and making that happen has meant creating change in a number of areas of my life. it’s fun, exciting, a tad scary and promises to make this year one of the most memorable ever. Wishing you happiness, health and plenty of adventures of your own in 2014. :-)

Ah, Marty I was so thrilled to read your comment! It sounds like your transition certainly is a big one and you have some exciting changes planned! Indeed, your approach is a great one. We need to be willing to think and live big, while embracing uncertainty to really make significant changes in our lives.

It’s great to see you here, my friend!

Indeed, such words have to be said with a strong undertone of care and compassion. I think good questions that help one see outside the box from the one he/she is stuck in can be a good start; particularly for people who are highly resistant to change.
