What State Are You In?

What state are you in as you read this post? Are you in a calm state? Are you in a rushed state? Maybe you’re in a slightly distracted state?

My point is that you are definitely in some state.

You might be a little moody first thing when you wake up. This could change to a focused state as you get ready to get on with your day. The state you’re in will continue to change throughout the day.

The thing about states is that they can govern exactly how you will feel and behave at any one time.

If you’re in a stressed state for instance, this will impact your actions. You might be grouchy. Subsequently, you might get annoyed by a stimulus in your environment such as someone wanting to interact with you.

As another example, if you’re in an anxious state, you might avoid taking action that ultimately would be good for you.

The great thing is you don’t need to be a slave to the states you find yourself in. For instance, if you’re feeling unconfident, then you don’t need to continue being in this state.

You can manage your states, so that you spend more time having internal experiences that bring out the best in you and that help you achieve your goals successfully.

You can use the following steps today to help you get into empowering states (I would like to give credit to Dr Bobby G. Bodenhamer and Dr L. Michael Hall for providing the inspiration for this approach):

1. Remember a time

If you’re finding yourself constantly in bad and unhelpful states, pick a state you would like to replace such states with.

If the state you want is a sense of happiness, remember a time when you were previously happy. Notice what this experience was like fully at that time, so that you can see it on the screen of your mind.

At first, do this so that you are looking at yourself like an actor in a movie.

Do it so that you can see the happy you, and begin to feel the same happiness.

Hear any sounds you heard at that time. Perhaps it was the sound of you speaking or someone else talking. Maybe there was music playing wherever you were at the time.

If you were using powerful self-talk at that time, then say the same words to yourself, now.

Next, as you feel this state in a compelling way, ‘step into’ it so that you’re now looking out of your own eyes. Look out into the world with the eyes of you who is completely happy (or whatever state you want).

Feel all the corresponding good feelings associated with this state as well. If it helps, take a walk around and notice the physiology and body language that supports this state. Speak out with the voice of you who is experiencing this wonderful state.

2. Take yourself into the future

Once you’re fully back into the same state, take your imagination out into the future and notice how you days and weeks change and improve when you do so from this empowering state.

3. Get into the state

Before you go out in the morning, access the same state again using your ability to imagine and feel, to help you get your day off to a super start.

If you find yourself getting into unhelpful states throughout the day, realign and consciously access the empowering state that makes you feel, happy, confident, assertive etc. again.

    I liked your steps to change your negative state to a better or positive one 🙂

    Yes, it’s certainly not easy, but not tough either to change your state to the one you like or want, provided you are ready to take the respective measures just as you mentioned. I guess being humans we all do go through the rough phases in life when everything isn’t the way we would want it to be, or perhaps we’d like to make it better.

    Speaking of myself, I tend to change my mood and think about things that make me happy, or try to do those things for a while till my not so good mood would change to a better one. I usually listen to music, go for a walk, watch some television or just cook up a dish…anything different from the routine or monotonous life helps I’d say.

  2. I’m usually in a state of wonderment, Hiten. Passing phases of frustration, sadness, worry are just phases because the ‘state’ is bigger than that.
    Wonderment keeps my eyes open to all opportunities, positives, happy times and gratitudes.

      I like the way you described being in a state of wonderment and how experiences such as frustration, worry etc are just phases. By the state of wonderment being greater than such phases, these phases lose their power. What a great way of looking at it!

  3. Getting in and out of specific states can definitely be tough. But like you stated in here, it really is mind over matter. Emotions can be controlled.

    Sometimes I find that the best way to get out of a certain state is to take some action that will get me into a better state. Once I take that directed action towards a more positive state, the forward momentum keeps me going.

As you said, taking action can be great way to get out of a bad state. Your comment reminded me of using our physiology to get into better states.   4. Hi Hiten,

    This is a really interesting way of shifting our attitudes to more positive ones. I do a lot of self-talk to turn around my mood, if I am feeling negative (or in a bad state). Usually it’s very logical–like I can’t change that I have to go to work, so might as well have a good attitude about it. But I like this idea of imagining a positive state.

    I also like your suggestion to do this first thing in the morning…How much better the days would be if we’d adjust our moods right off the bat.

  5. Presence always gets me back into a neutral state even though it can be hard to completely relax at times.

    Take now for instance, I am in a confused state because I am unsure if I should go to the gym before my next guitar lesson or afterwards. Something trivial but I feel anxious because I can’t make up my mind.

    I should just chill out and let whatever happens, happen.

      I loved what you wrote about being present in order to get into a neutral state, which is the purest one to be in. When we’re present, there’s no need to be in any other state and it gives us the opportunity to do as you say, and let whatever is going to happen, to happen.

      Indeed, peace and calm are our most natural states. So often our natural peace gets disturbed by our ego, which creates havoc. As you quite rightly said, it takes just a moment to become in tune with our inner peace again. Meditative practices can certainly help us develop our capacity to do this.

  7. hey Hiten, I appreciate you writing this post and know the power of changing states. I think for me I use a visualization technique if I’m trying to be in a particular state. If in an interview situation, I’ve had to channel confidence. If in a stressful situation or in a high pressure situation situation, calmness. I use music, visualization, inner reflection to change states and I know it works! Changing our mindset is key to changing our physical states.

    We each have the power to do it – just awareness and acknowledgment of power to change states is an excellent start so reading your post here is the first step to state change. Thanks for sharing.

      Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with state changes and also for sharing the methods you use. Indeed, the types of approaches you shared to change our states really do work. Like you, I use visualisation a lot. I also like to use internal self-talk to help change my states.

      Learning to manage our states is so important to help us navigate the world with more vigour and happiness. As you quite rightly said, we all have the power to do it. If more people just learnt simple ways to shift their states, they would be doing a great service to themselves.

  8. To get into state, I tend to use the body language that confident people use in order to become confident.

    Physiology definitely affects our psychology and it definitely true when emulating truly successful people, even if you’re not feeling it at the moment.

    Failing that, I would put on a feel good song and jump up and down for a few minutes to get the blood circulation going around my body. This usually pumps me up enough to then sit down and do what needs to be done 🙂

  11. It’s really important to realize how much power your emotional state holds over the mind and how you perceive things.

    I’ve felt pretty motivated and productive the entire week with the exception of today. This morning I woke up and felt really tired and demotivated – everything I felt like doing my brain was rationalizing as boring or unnecessary.

    A couple of years back I would have probably bought into this excuse and rested on my laurels instead of kept going and forced myself to do some important tasks despite my state being low.

    Gotta lead yourself.

  12. I am actually in a state of dilemma infact is in a boulevard of such confusions. 🙁
    I am following the book “THE SECRET” since long, and I am rigidly following the rule “Thoughts becomes things” and till now everything has fallen into the place but I am scared of the possible results of outcome for my current decisions I have taken. I mean I am doubtful of what if it wont work and things wont fall into the correct place.
    Need your help.
